ORTHOTIC– we believe in minimal or no orthotic usage philosophy. We have managed to treat hundreds of cases of TMJD successfully without the use of orthotics. Due to the various disadvantaged associated with orthotic or occlusal splint, we generally don’t prefer treating our patients with it.

DISADVANTAGES OF USING ORTHOTIC-

Appearance of gap between teeth on prolonged usage due to shift or change in the position of teeth.

Sometimes prolonged usage may even result in fracture of teeth.

Causes disturbance in the manner of normal meeting of teeth thereby resulting in shift in the Centric Relation.

Effective in only 70 percent of patients.

Require major tooth grindings in cases where occlusal plane is not harmonious, particularly in supra-erupted teeth.

It provides a sense of well-being in the patient for a few months thereby making them postpone the main treatment for a longer duration which results in almost permanent disturbance in the bite.

Uncomfortable

Can easily be lost or broken, thereby causing a financial burden.

Mostly requires several sittings for adjustment in order to keep it balanced.

It doesn’t provide a super hard surface like natural teeth going against principles of nature.

High cost
