Technical advancements have occurred in the surgery involved in implant dentistry. Even though teeth implants require high degree of expertise, there are some specific branches of dentistry, which allow the dentists to perform these procedures. Maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists and periodontists can perform implants, but dental implantologist is present in our dental implant clinic in India. Such expertise has been gained by training courses and long years of experience. So, dental implants in India are possible nowadays by dentists, who have received special trainings in the implantology stream. From the procedure point of view, there are three basic types of implants, depending on the space and attachment to the jaw. They are endosseous, subperiosteal and transosteal. Endosseous implants are done within the bone of the jaw. In such cases, the implants are shaped like a screw or cylinder and are made of metal, or covered with ceramic. It is placed within the jaw bone. Subperiosteal implants are done on the top of the bone, where a metal framework is done and attached on the top of the jaw, but below the gum tissue. In few cases, transosteal process of implant is required, where the shape is in form of metal pin or u-shaped frame, which penetrates deep into the jaw bone and into the facial bones.
Method of putting in teeth implants is divided into five types in dental implant clinic in India. These are classified based on the number of teeth put in the jaw bone.
Single tooth implant is done in cases where there is one tooth missing. Even when there is sufficient damage due to decay or the crown is lost to a large extent, the remaining part of the tooth and its root is extracted. In its place, an implant is put by the dental implantologist. Many people go for such dental implants in India, as it is easy, cheaper and perfect substitute for permanent replacement of tooth.
Multiple teeth implants are done for replacement of more than one tooth. There may be more than one tooth in a row or in different places. In such cases, if the jaw bone is able to hold the implants, then the crowns are fitted in different places, over implants. In some cases, consecutive teeth are fixed over a single implant, putting the crown over the abutment formed from the gum tissue.
All teeth missing, is a special case of denture fixing, where a number of implants are put into the jaw bones. In most cases, this is a kind of permanent denture, where an artificial set of teeth is formed, along with the basal gum prosthesis and the entire denture is then fixed over the implant abutment. Dental implant involving all missing teeth is becoming common in dental implant clinic in India these days as such dentures are held for long term and are form of permanent solutions.
Zygomatic implants are rare cases of teeth implants, as these are done in patients with thinned out or eroded jaw bones. It is difficult to anchor the implant in the jaw bone and hence a long structure is passed up to the cheek bone through the maxillary sinus. Although, it is a good way to make implants, reconstruction of bones is usually done for anchoring the dental implant in such patients.
Teeth in a day are possible nowadays, as dental implantologist can put in one or more implants, immediately after the extraction of the teeth. Although, implant dentistry in this format is not very popular, still it is possible in the dental implant clinic in India. Still, many dentists will prefer for implants to be put over a few sittings for proper ossification of the jaw bone around the implants.
